Advito Launches Hotel Sustainability Index to Measure Hotel Environmental Performance
Chicago – December 11, 2025 – Advito, a global leader in corporate travel sustainability consulting, today announced the launch of the Hotel Sustainability Index (HSI), a new scoring framework that gives corporate travel programs a comprehensive way to evaluate the environmental performance of all hotel properties around the world. Built on detailed data provided in-part directly by hotels and major chains, the HSI addresses one of the biggest data gaps in the hotel industry: the lack of consistent, comparable environmental information that goes beyond emissions alone.
With more than 76 percent of travel buyers now incorporating sustainability goals into their corporate policies, companies need greater access to hotel impact information. “Travel buyers have been asking for a better way to understand and measure hotel sustainability,” said Julien Etchanchu, Global Lead for Advito’s Sustainability Consulting practice. “With the HSI, we’re giving our clients an authoritative tool based on actual hotel data and real-world conditions. It helps organizations see where the meaningful differences are and how to act on that information.”
The index scores properties up to 100 points across six categories: CO₂ emissions, water consumption, energy usage, eco-certifications, transparency, and other sustainability initiatives, like single-use plastics, recycling, and more. The index combines absolute performance with relative performance, creating fair comparisons across regions that have different electricity mixes, water availability, or infrastructure. For example, a hotel in a high-carbon-grid region may receive a lower absolute CO₂ score, but strong relative performance against its local peers.
Advito developed the HSI to both measure performance and encourage transparency. Hotels that voluntarily provide data receive disclosure points, while non-reporting properties receive no transparency credit and are benchmarked using regional averages based on the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) methodology and GATE4, Advito’s widely recognized ISO-certified carbon emissions measurement methodology. Today, the HSI helps clients score and benchmark their preferred hotel suppliers and include sustainability as a factor when conducting hotel RFPs via its integration into Advito’s proprietary sourcing tool.
While the initial launch focuses on providing clients with a reliable dataset and scoring framework, as the index matures, it will help power new analyses and program optimization strategies. It will eventually power point-of-sale nudging for travelers, providing them with market-specific insights into hotel sustainability and guiding them towards better choices.
“Companies want to align their travel programs with climate goals, but until now the data just hasn’t been there,” said Etchanchu. “HSI allows them to differentiate between hotels that simply meet a baseline and those demonstrating continuous improvement and operational accountability – giving them better insight into the sustainability of their hotel partners and creating a foundation to guide their travelers towards more responsible choices.”
